Kolkata Environmental Improvement Project (KEIP) is a multi-agency endeavour to arrest environmental degradation and improve the quality of life in Kolkata. Its work is mainly in the outer areas of the city where the sewerage and drainage infrastructure is grossly inadequate and the drainage canals are choked by silt.

KEIP’s  objectives  are  to  reduce  pollution

by providing affordable access to basic urban services in slums, revamp and up grade the sewerage and drainage system, make solid waste management system efficient,restore the city's drainage canals , and improve outdoor recreation facilities in parks and water bodies. It also has a capacity building component to raise the standards of KMC’s delivery of municipal services.

Canal Rehabilitation
Canals, which are the major outfalls for the sewerage and drainage systems are almost completely silted up and very polluted. They have to be dredged and desilted. Work on the EE1(West) Canal, and EE1(minor) Canal has already started. Cross embankment is undergoing on these canals. Linked to the improvement of the canals is the resettling of about 3,468 families living along the canal banks.

The original canal rehabilitation plan has undergone some modifications because of two reasons:
(i) complications arising out of procurement of land needed for resettling the canal bank dwellers;
(ii) a reworked strategy to further synergise sewerage and drainage work and canal improvement.

 Brief Details of Pumping Stations:
 
1. 3rd Additional Pumping Station proposed at Chowbhaga, will pump out the drainage discharge of TP Basin (part),  having total working capacity of 25.51 cumec.
 2. Keorapukur Pumping Station proposed near Kudghat Metro Station, will pump out the drainage discharge of  Keorapukur Basin, having total working capacity of 15.59 cumec.
 3. Monikhali Pumping Station proposed at Akra, will pump out the drainage discharge of Monikhali Basin, having  total working capacity of 19.84 cumec at present with future provision of expansion with 1 no. 4.25 cumec pump.
