Kolkata Environmental Improvement Project (KEIP) is a multi-agency endeavour to arrest environmental degradation and improve the quality of life in Kolkata. Its work is mainly in the outer areas of the city where the sewerage and drainage infrastructure is grossly inadequate and the drainage canals are choked by silt.

KEIP’s  objectives  are  to  reduce  pollution

by providing affordable access to basic urban services in slums, revamp and up grade the sewerage and drainage system, make solid waste management system efficient,restore the city's drainage canals , and improve outdoor recreation facilities in parks and water bodies. It also has a capacity building component to raise the standards of KMC’s delivery of municipal services.

Background

The Government of West Bengal is keen to conserve and promote the East Kolkata Wetland (EKW) not only because India is a party to the Ramsar Convention, but also because “wise use” of the wetlands will benefit the city of Kolkata and the region in terms of ecological balance, economic returns through eco-tourism and a valuable opportunity for environmental education and recreation for students and adults. The "wise use" of wetlands means “the sustainable utilization of wetlands for benefit of humankind in a way compatible with the maintenance of the natural properties of the ecosystem”.
Communities have a big role to play in conserving and promoting the EKW and the wise use of the wetland. There is a definite need for communities to be involved in various stages of conceptualizing and planning of development activities in EKW.

The Task

The NGOs engaged under EKW will carry out resource mapping of livelihood practices, create general awareness in the communities to strengthen the ecological balance in the wetland and provide capacity building support to it.

The NGOs engaged under KEIP for EKW have as its

Objectives

(i) To involve beneficiaries in resource mapping, visioning, conceptualization and systematic planning in all development activities taken up in EKW.
(ii) To assess the professional needs of the communities with regard to their livelihood practices, and bring about a synergy with the ecological requirements of EKW.

Special Tasks

1. To map livelihood practices of communities living in EKW.
2. Document best practices with regard to livelihood activities that are in conformity with the ecological requirements of EKW.
3. Document traditional livelihood activities that are not in conformity with the ecological requirements of EKW.
4. Create general awareness and an environment in communities to strengthen and sustain best livelihood practices and modify the ones that are not conducive to the ecological balance of EKW.
5. Handholding support and capacity building of communities for their participation in visioning, conceptualization and systematic planning in all the development activities taken up in EKW.
