Kolkata Environmental Improvement Project (KEIP) is a multi-agency endeavour to arrest environmental degradation and improve the quality of life in Kolkata. Its work is mainly in the outer areas of the city where the sewerage and drainage infrastructure is grossly inadequate and the drainage canals are choked by silt.

KEIP’s  objectives  are  to  reduce  pollution

by providing affordable access to basic urban services in slums, revamp and up grade the sewerage and drainage system, make solid waste management system efficient, restore the city's drainage canals , and improve outdoor recreation facilities in parks and water bodies. It also has a capacity building component to raise the standards of KMC’s delivery of municipal services.

Wetland Interpretation Centre
The over-riding concern with respect to the East Kolkata Wetland is that development of the area should not change the current pattern of land use, nor should it result in upsetting the ecological balance. It is of paramount importance that development should be low-impact and not result in air, water or noise pollution.
Therefore, the Kolkata Environment Improvement Project will support the setting up a Nature and Wetland Interpretation Centre on 30 acres in Bantala with an additional 2,000 acres available for demonstration of wise use. The 30 acres for the Interpretation Center is planned primarily for educational purpose, while the 2,000 acres is proposed for responsible eco-tourism uses.

The area will have

1. an exhibition centre of different kinds of flora and fauna in the form of herbarium display/ model display / preservation using adequate and proper chemicals, etc., in the Interpretation Center.
2. a small auditorium for audio visual projection.
3. an observation deck as well as observation “hides” unobtrusively located around the other 2,000 acres.
4. space for an office, laboratory, documentation centre and common facility built in a manner that uses appropriate materials and blends with the local environment.
5. a bird sanctuary. The sanctuary will provide for roosting and nesting, for example, by planting of reed beds in the water bodies.
6. low-impact tourism facilities such as boating, walking trails and bicycle pathways, and a non-polluting transport system such as cycles and cycle rickshaw. All-weather information boards will be set up unobtrusively in the entire area.

The other plans include

1. eco-forestry, horticulture and medicinal plant cultivation in available land in adjacent villages. Villagers may be motivated and trained in naturopathy and herbal treatment through capacity building undertaken by the Centre.
2. an eco-friendly low cost housing model with sanitation.
3. use of green energy / non-conventional energy.
4. inventory of the habitation with details of human habitations.
5. technology-based learning centre using, for instance, touch-screen kiosks and experiential learning devices and games.
6. regular capacity building activities for the local people.
7. demonstration of value-added waste recycling production systems.
